Our Approach to Lip Filler
Lip filler at Derma Theory is about proportion, not size. The goal is a lip that fits your face, with a defined border and a natural shape when you talk and smile, rather than a lip that announces itself. The practice is built on facial balancing, so your lips are assessed as part of the whole face, including the chin and the smile lines around them. A chin that sits back can make the lips look larger than they are, and sometimes the most natural lip result starts somewhere else.
If this is your first time, a mini lip filler is often the right place to start. You can always add more later, and a lip that builds gradually tends to look more like your own.

What Is Signature Lips?
Signature Lips is lip filler with one of two finishing options, chosen with your injector for your lip shape.
Lip flip. A small amount of neurotoxin placed around the upper lip relaxes the targeted muscle and creates a subtle outward turn of the upper lip, so more of it shows when you smile. Lip threads. PDO threads are placed along the lip border to enhance definition, including the cupid’s bow. They dissolve over time.
What Are Russian Lips?
Russian lips is a popular name for a lip filler technique that places small amounts of filler vertically to add height and a lifted look, rather than forward projection. It is not a different filler or a separate package at Derma Theory. It is one of the techniques your injector may use when it suits the shape of your lips.
Whether a vertical, lifted approach fits you depends on your natural lip shape, the proportion between your upper and lower lip, and how much product your lips can hold while still looking like yours. If you arrive with a photo of Russian lips, we will talk through what parts of that look suit your face and plan the technique around it.
Is Lip Filler Right for Me?
Lip filler suits someone who wants more volume, a clearer border, or better balance between the upper and lower lip, right away. It is not the right choice during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with an active infection near the lips, and we review your health history before any treatment.

If You Have Had Lip Filler Before
New patients with no previous filler can book lip filler directly. We still assess your lips and talk through the plan before any treatment.
If you already have filler, from us or from another clinic, a separate consultation may be recommended when there is a concern, an unclear treatment history, possible migration, or when correction or dissolving may be needed. We also dissolve hyaluronic acid filler placed by another provider when appropriate. Dissolving may take more than one session and can cause temporary swelling. A consultation is $100, applied toward dissolving if it can be done in the same appointment.
What to Expect at Your Lip Filler Appointment
A lip filler appointment takes 30 minutes to an hour. We confirm the plan and the product, apply a topical numbing cream and let it work, and add a dental block if you have chosen one. Your injector then places the filler in small amounts, checking symmetry and movement throughout.
Swelling is usually most noticeable in the first 24 to 48 hours and can make the lips look larger than the final result. For the first 48 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and unnecessary pressure on or manipulation of your lips. Filler takes about two weeks to settle, so judge the shape after that. We do not schedule follow ups in advance, and if you have a concern after two weeks, we book a follow up assessment.
How Long Does Lip Filler Last?
Hyaluronic acid filler commonly lasts 6 to 18 months, and the lips tend to sit toward the shorter end of that range because they move constantly. Results vary between individuals. Hyaluronic acid filler is also reversible. A 2024 review in JMIR Dermatology (Kroumpouzos and Treacy) concludes that hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid, can safely treat most hyaluronic acid filler complications.
